Trump Administration EPA Freezes Fuel Economy Improvements

Trump Administration EPA Freezes Fuel Economy Improvements

By 2026, we were to see vehicle fuel economy improvements that would have given us between 50 and 52.6 MPG. Recent proposals by the Trump administration would halt all improvements for the foreseeable future. The proposal is currently being challenged by 20 attorney generals and several environmental groups.

The intent of the proposal is to lower new car costs. The current standard improvements would raise new car costs by nearly $2500 and lead to lower car sales. Trump's Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao released a statement "The standards implemented by the previous administration raised the cost and decreased the supply of newer, safer vehicles. The government also previously failed to conduct a midterm review in the manner promised. Customers' preferences have also changed since the current standards were introduced."

The opposition is stating that halting the improvements will lead to higher gas prices due to shortage and massive increases in greenhouse gas emissions.

While many auto manufacturers have shown interest in adopting voluntary emission improvements, it's doubtful that most would consider the freeze on improvements detrimental to their profitability, especially in a time where stiff tarries may be on the horizon.
