VW is Feeling Groovy with its All-Electric Microbus

Volkswagen recently unveiled a new concept car during the Detroit Auto Show and oh yes, it has created quite a buzz. In fact, it is called the VW ID Buzz and it's an all-electric reincarnation of the old classic microbus.

At Honda Of Walla Walla Auto Repair Service , we have heard VW does not yet have a firm date for when they will begin producing this vehicle or when it will be available for sale, but, when introducing the ID Buzz, the carmaker talked about a "big electric offensive" to begin in 2020. By 2025, VW wants to be selling one million electric vehicles annually and we will see them in College Place and all over WA.

In a statement the carmaker released recently, they proclaim that they  are making electric mobility their new trademark. The ID Buzz concept microbus follows on the VW ID electric concept car unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last summer.

The ID Buzz will reportedly have a 270-mile driving range, according to Volkswagen and 369 horsepower generated by two electric motors. However, VW did not say exactly how that driving range was calculated.

With one electric motor in front and another in back, the ID Buzz will feature all-wheel drive. It's also fully capable of autonomous driving, according to the carmaker. The driver's seat is kind of cool, because it can even be turned around 180 degrees to face backward and the steering wheel retracts into the dashboard on command.

While the original VW Microbus was renowned for having little power and being slow, the ID Buzz will be able to race from zero to 60 mph in just five seconds, with a top speed limited to 99 mph.

The name Buzz pivots off the word "Bus," while ID stands for "Idea," "Identity," or "Intelligent Design," just to name a few.

The car manufacturer's big push on electric vehicles follows the automaker's recent diesel emissions controversy. VW was caught installing software that reduced injurious emissions from many of the its diesel-powered vehicles, but only during the testing stages. To make up for that and keep VW and create some much-needed positive news has agreed to promote electric cars aggressively.

This is not VW's sole electric bus concept, if you recall. Their BUDD-e electric concept bus was unveiled last year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. At that time VW reported that the electric VW bus could be in production by the end of the year 2020, so stay tuned. By becoming a more planet-friendly company, VW is re-inventing itself yet again with the new ID Buzz Microbus.
