With the discovery that Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Subaru had misrepresented data regarding fuel economy with their recent models, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Tourism launched an investigation into other Japanese automotive manufacturers. Unfortunately it was discovered that along with the previously mentioned companies Mazda was found to have "inappropriately handled" test data. This data was the basis for which several Mazda vehicles' MPG was determined. 

Internal investigations performed by both Yamaha and Suzuki also found errors of the same nature. The anomalous data was derived from speed trace errors. This means that speed parameters during the testing were exceeded while the data remained in the set. 

Mazda was quoted in the report "We would like to offer our sincere apologies for the concern this matter has caused our customers and to all stakeholders.

We are treating this matter very seriously and will make every effort to prevent similar occurrences in the future." With the memory of the misdeeds of Volkswagen still fresh in consumer's memories, this may be a costly mistake to make. Still, no charges have been filed and no retractions wave been issued.

The conclusion of the reports have stated that the mistakes made by the Japanese manufacturers were not only most likely unintentional but made little difference in the outcome of the tests.
