How To Fix Foggy Headlights

Your headlights on your vehicle can get cloudy over time and we see it often at Don Wood Chevrolet Auto Repair Service in Logan, OH. Suddenly you notice that your headlights are not as quite as clear, and not as bright as they once were. You will also notice that your headlights look yellowish and dingy. This is caused by the plastic on your headlights being exposed to the UV rays from the sun. Other factors that can dirty your headlights are, salt, sand and debris from the road. While this is annoying and unsightly, it is an issue that can easily be remedied.

What To Use When Cleaning Headlights

There are many products out on the market that are geared toward cleaning up the lens of headlights. You will need to look for a product that says something along the lines of headlight lens restoration. Do your research, and find the best one for you. There are many different cleaning solutions available. You will want to make sure that they can clean your lens well. Look for reviews from other people to get their thoughts on the product. Take your time, and pick a cleaning solution that will ensure that you will have the best solution for your cloudy headlights. If you do not have access to a product like this, you can use baking soda as well as toothpaste.

Here are some supplies that you will need when cleaning your cloudy headlights:

• Water

• Soft bristled brush

• Cleaning kit, baking soda, or toothpaste

• Gloves

• Rags

• Sandpaper. (In some cases, when the lens is very dirty, you might have to give a light scrub with mild sandpaper, remember to do this gently as you do not want to damage your headlights.)

How to Do It

The first thing that you will want to do is to wipe the lens down. From there you will want to take your brush, and place the cleaning solution on the lens. Take your brush, and rub in a circular motion. Be careful, but you will want to put some effort into this. As you are scrubbing you should see some of the fogginess lift from the lens. Take a rag dabbed in water, and remove the cleaner. Get a clean towel, dry, and polish the lens.

Once you have cleaned your headlights, you will immediately notice that they look brand new. When you turn them on, you should notice that they are bright, and are no longer tinged a yellowish color. You will want to clean your headlights several times a year. Just whenever you see them getting dingy or dim, consider cleaning them.
