I came in to have my brakes fixed. I explained that I had reciently had the rotors, pads and calipers replaced at a local garage, and my calipers were hanging up yet the mechanic refused to acknowledge anything was wrong. I paid $98 to have your mechanics diagnose the problem, and they concurred that my calipers were malfunctioning. Your sales person quoted me the price to have them replaced w/Honda calipers, and explained the benefit of Honda parts in this case. I told him that I would consider, since the cost was $722 plus tax, and I had just paid $600 to the other mechanic for the brake job.
I explained that if I did it I would want my old calipers back so I could go back to that mechanic and try to get him to refund me for the faulty calipers . Your sales person said no problem. He understood my situation, anc that the calipers on my van were after market parts .
I came in, got the work done, expecting new Honda calipers and my old ones back for the price I was quoted.
Instead, after the work was done I was told that I had to pay $150 core charge whether I took my old parts or not, in addition to the $722 quoted to me, because they weren’t Honda parts and couldn’t be returned for rebuilding. I was very taken back, and told him that he quoted me a price, never told me anything about a core charge, and that I didn’t want to pay TWICE for bad calipers!!! Because I had no way of knowing whether the other mechanic would give me my money back. Your sales person stood his ground, politely and professionally,but I insisted that this was wrong. A female manager came out , hearing our debate over this, and seeing that I was very upset. She explained about the core charge, but wanted to do something to try to offset the cost. They got permission to take $20 each of the cost of my new calipers still leaving me to pay $110.00 for my old calipers back. I was very upset. Then the female manager came back out and told me that they didnt know that I had aftermarket calipers on at the time of the quote. I said that they absolutely DID, that the sales person knew exactly what parts I had on my Honda. And knew I wanted them, and why, at the time of the quote. Still they weren’t budging on the charge. I paid the addl charge, in tears, but then pushed the point, saying that I had been in sales and customer service most of my life and if I quoted someone the wrong price I was responsible for it, and that I made an appt in good faith for a certain amount and this charge should have been disclosed before not after the work was done! And that I came to Honda because I felt I could trust the dealership after my bad experience elsewhere. It was also disclosed to me that the calipers your mechanics put on my van were reconditioned, not new! I had no idea that I wasn’t paying for new parts! That also should have been disclosed to me, and wasn’t.
I also asked them if it wasn’t the law that a bill couldn’t be more than 10% higher than the original quote?
In the end, the female manager came over, and in pure exasperation told me that she was giving me back the core charge amd I could take my calipers. At no time did anyone validate that I was correct that I should not be told of an addl charge after the work was done, and be expected to pay it. The female manager told me no more needed said, and that we both had “learned a big lesson. “I was made to feel unreasonable and ashamed for insisting that they should honor their quote, and not charge me this addl fee. The sales person said to me that “ We fixed your van for you” and I said thank you, but was made to feel like they did me aFAVOR!! Over $800 later they were doing ME a favor!??!!
I’m sorry, but I paid what they said it would cost, and took my calipers like was agreed when I contracted to have the work done. I did nothing wrong.
I left feeling frustrated, made to feel like I was the problem, and like I could never come back again and not be marked as a problem customer.
This was my first visit to your dealership and needless to say no trust was established and I won’t be back. The sales person knew it was his mistake, but because of those over him he did all to make me pay this extra charge, and at no time did he acknowledge in a straight forward manner that this misunderstanding was his fault entirely. Instead, I was made to feel the brunt of it by being treated like I was unreasonable.
I shared with my family and my coworkers what happened afterwards and everyone agreed that your staff was absolutely in the wrong, and that it was disgraceful how I was made to feel. And outraged that I was given reconditioned parts w/out my knowledge and expected to pay to have my old parts back, which I just paid another mechanic for!!
I was shaken, at one point I cried, and was completely disappointed that a Honda dealership couldn’t be trusted.
The whole experience has made me reconsider owning a Honda.
