I am disappointed with the service I received at Handy Toyota. I went in for my free oil change and was then informed that I had a missing front left caliper bolt on my Toyota Corolla. They informed me that this was extremely dangerous and that I couldn’t leave the shop with my car. They said they would give me a rental vehicle until the next morning when it was fixed and quoted me $330. The quote was due to the fact that “they couldn’t find a bolt and tried calling everywhere so they instead need to replace the whole caliper”. I looked up the bolt online and saw that they were in stock at two local auto part stores for around $5. Unfortunately due to the fear that their words caused and my limited knowledge about cars as a young woman, I took the rental car. Luckily, my father learned about the situation and is more versed in cars than myself and figured out that there was some weird discrepancies with what they had told me. My dad brought me back to the dealership and asked them if I was unable to take the car home. They said yes as long as I would sign a waiver. We got the car home and went to get the $5 bolt. The bolt was missing, but looked as if it was just cleanly taken off at the shop beforehand as there were signs that it hadn’t been without a bolt for long. I am extremely disappointed with the lack of morals and integrity to take advantage of a young woman and especially regarding her safety, as well as financially. I no longer feel comfortable bringing my car there and will warn others. This is unfortunate as I had free oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections left as a result of purchasing my vehicle there.

Oil change and state inspection took nearly 2.5 hours. While I recognize mistakes happen and the wrong oil filter was order, my issue with the experience was that nobody came up to give me an update. What seemed to be by chance, as I was standing by parts, a handy employee asked if I was taken care of. I expressed by frustration on the wait, by this point 1.5 hours and only then after he inquired did I find out that it would be longer due to the filter issue. He did offer my young daughter some hot chocolate which I appreciated the gesture.
Again, issues arise but I would have appreciated better communication. I recognize service doesn’t know this but my family has bought many vehicles from handy, There didn’t seem to be a sense of urgency to get me on the road at any point of the wait or any desire to ensure I was informed.
The manager ultimately compensated my oil change, and this helped with lowering my frustration a bit.
