I purchased a 2006 Tacoma with approximately 235,000 miles a few weeks ago. The truck is in pretty good shape for its age but it had a noticeable vibration while under acceleration. I brought it in to get an oil change and to have the vibration diagnosed. I was told that the vibration was due to severe tire cupping and new tires should remedy the issue so I bought a new set of tires (not at the dealership). Unfortunately, the vibration did not improve afterwards so I brought my truck back to be looked at again. I rode with a mechanic this time and he was able to reproduce the vibration. I was told I needed a completely new transmission and it would cost $4800 before tax. For context, I paid $9000 for the truck a few weeks ago so this suggestion of a new transmission was out of the question. I am disappointed that Roseville Toyota is not able to provide a more comprehensive approach to my issue. I am not a mechanic, but I am also not stupid. I realize my truck is old but it does not need an entirely new transmission. I researched the issue and apparently the problem is well documented and fairly common with this generation Tacoma: flex lock up. When I put the gear selector in “4” rather than “D”, there is no issue. Obviously, this is not an ideal way to operate my vehicle for the long term, however, it clearly diagnosed the issue. I wasted time and money with this situation so I will not be returning to Roseville Toyota. It appears there was an internal breakdown of communication between the mechanic and the service representative that should probably be addressed.
