Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Museums

If Germany is on your list of places to visit and you happen to be near Stuttgart, consider stopping at two museums—Mercedes-Benz and Porsche—for a very memorable experience. Both destinations showcase unique architecture, phenomenal vehicles and promise to entertain the entire family. Yes, you can visit both in one day. The distance between the two museums is about six miles, but they are located on the other side of the city from each other.

At Nissan Motor Corp, we love car museums and these are two of the best. If we ever get a chance to travel from Sterling, VA to Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums are both a must see!

The Mercedes-Benz Museum

Known for showcasing more than 130 years of automotive history, the Mercedes-Benz Museum is located outside the factory gates at the car manufacturer’s parent plant. The nine-level building includes more than 160 vehicles and 1,500 exhibits.

The “cutting-edge” museum has a unique structure where there are no straight walls or closed rooms. There were three architectural firms instrumental in its design. Built of aluminum and glass, the museum has received numerous awards over the years for its architecture.

It also offers amenities for children, including a special audio guide, planned birthday parties, and classes. Guided architectural and art tours are available for visitors. They include views of the seven Legend rooms, which highlight the history of Mercedes-Benz and five other collection rooms that demonstrate the diversity of the collection. While you’re there, check out the museum shop for some unique gifts or take the time to enjoy the fine dining restaurant or more casual café.

The Porsche Museum

Take a trip back in history at the Porsche Museum located nearby the headquarters of Dr. Ing. H.c.F. Porsche AG. You’ll find more than 80 vehicles in the 5,600-square-meter exhibition area.

The museum dates back to 2004 when the decision was made to hold a design competition to build the project. Construction began the following year and the museum officially opened in January 2009. Designed by Delugan Meissl, the museum is supported by three V-shaped columns and many have said the structure “seems to float above the ground like a monolith.” Guided tours can be booked in advance.

Inside, you’ll see iconic Porsche vehicles such as the 356, 550, 911 and 917. Visitors also have the opportunity to view technical achievements from Professor Ferdinand Porsche from the early 20th century. The Idea section tells the story of Porsche and pays tribute to the people who were instrumental in the company’s development. There are numerous exhibitions to see including a Porsche Touchwall.
