Should You Avoid Those Fast Oil Change Companies?

I have had both good and bad experiences having my oil changed at one of these retail fast oil change services over the years. So, the question is--can you safely get your oil changed at one of these places? Well, the answer from all of us at Raiford Buick & GMC in Port Arthur, TX is yes--but don't assume that the people working there are mechanics, just because they dress like them.

I took my car to one of these oil changing companies recently to get my oil changed and they tried to upsell me right and left. They told me my car has a leak (which was false) and they also said I needed a new air filter, which was also not true. So, that experience was not a positive one obviously and that's why I started wondering about going back.

So the young man telling me that I had an oil leak was actually referring to the back of my engine, or my transmission or even from the differential. Those parts of my car's system all contain different fluids, but did he know that? I'm not certain, because he is not a trained repair technician, so to be honest I have really no confidence in his advice.

Judging by the overall turnover rate at some of these quick oil change places, I suspect that the amount of training that they normally receive is limited at best. Can they diagnose any mechanical problems with your vehicle while they are actually changing the oil? Don't ever count on it.

I have seen a wide range of rather serious screw ups by quickie oil change shops over the years, believe me. Filters have fallen off, drain plugs never got reinstalled. Did they remember putting the new oil in after they removed the old oil? You'd be surprised by all of the silly mistakes these fast oil change services can commit.

So, if you decide to take your vehicle to one of these companies, I would suggest that you first watch them as they do their work while paying particular attention to the person who puts the fresh oil into your car. Then when you get home, immediately start looking for leaks. By being a diligent and savvy customer you will hopefully get an oil change that is precise, at a good price and one that is guaranteed.
