Is Your Car Ready for Your Summer Vacation?

Time for a road trip! Is your car ready? Here at Philpott Toyota Auto Repair Service, we love summer because that means it's vacation time! People all over the country will be headed out to destinations like theme parks, the beach, and other attractions. So, if you’re going to drive any distance this summer, as you exit Nederland or the state of TX altogether, it would be wise to get your car ready for the trip ahead.

Summer's heat and humidity—not to mention all of the stop-and-go traffic you might encounter takes its toll on your vehicle rather quickly. To avoid these types of vacation car drama, here are some tips. To identify and fix most of these car ailments, you will need to take your vehicle to your local car dealership's service department to get the work done right.

Air Conditioning

A poorly operating system will usually fail in hot weather. Well before your vacation begins, take your car to your local service department to have the AC examined by a qualified technician. Newer cars have specialized cabin air filters that clean the air as they enter the heating and air conditioning system.

Cooling System

The number one cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. Your cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled every two years without fail. Too many car owners wait too long and don't pay attention to their cooling systems until it's too late. By adhering to a scheduled maintenance plan with your local service department, you will be able to stay away from overheating and other issues associated with a faulty cooling system.

Oil Getting Ready for a Long Road Trip

Your oil is like your car's blood--so keep it clean and your vehicle will take care of you. Some types of oil require changing them every 3,000 miles, but you can drive longer with some of these newer, synthetic oils. So always ask your technician or consult your owner's manual for the proper oil for your car.

Engine Performance

You should never really change any filter yourself, because for one there are a lot of them, including air, fuel and PCV to name a few. Always get engine drivability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at qualified service department at your local car dealership.

Tires

Where are you going this summer?Rotating your tires every 5,000 miles is a sage decision that will benefit for the long haul. Additionally, always make certain to periodically check your spare.

Brakes

Brakes are a huge safety issue, so please be sure to have them inspected at recommended intervals. Listen to your brakes and check for pulling or mushy brakes, because those are the early signs of brake failure.

Battery

Batteries can fail during any season and yes--that includes summer. Have your battery checked along with your vehicle's summer vacation checkup and if it is starting to show age, don't hesitate to replace it. By trying to save a few bucks now, you might encounter a breakdown on the way to your favorite theme park or National Park this summer, which could likely cost you considerably more.
