Should I Purchase an Extended Warranty For My Car?

Planning to get a warranty for your car? When you buy your new car, you want to know that it will serve you for many years to come. Here are some helpful directives, brought to you by all of us at B & B Auto Sales, a service department that honors warranties for many of our customers here in Vidor and all over TX every day.

If you're planning on buying a new car every few years, then an extended warranty probably does not make sense for you. However, if you plan to own your car for a long time past the expiration of the manufacturer’s warranty, it might be worth to consider an extended warranty, since all vehicles become less reliable over time.

Extended warranty policies are attractive to car owners, because they provide a peace of mind and reduce the risk of expensive repairs that may not be covered by the factory warranty. They’re offered by car dealers, auto clubs and others and come in a wide range of coverage options. Buying such a policy is convenient, because its cost is typically rolled in with the car’s. Based on customer service index studies, more people report being happy with the extended warranty that they bought from the dealer.

Consumer Reports recently released a survey that found more than half of all new car buyers who bought an extended warranty never had to use it. But they were relieved knowing they had it just in case.

More than half of those who reported that they had the bumper-to-bumper coverage (as opposed to a more limited type), possibly because of the helpful extras like reimbursements for towing charges or car rentals, that are often included.

Beware of people trying to sell you extended warranties by mail or phone, since these can be scams targeting owners whose warranties are expiring. Call your dealer to confirm that they are legitimate and that your original warranty has actually expired. In addition, never give your credit card number over the phone or by mail without first reviewing a contract. If you really want a good, solid warranty why not purchase it from the dealership that originally sold you the vehicle?

Some extended warranty buying tips:Remember to get honest warranty protection

  • Don’t buy under pressure.
  • Don’t be scared to haggle for a better deal.
  • Shop around. Do your due diligence and get 3-4 bids from several different companies.
  • Read the fine print. Know what's covered. Go online and check reviews about it.
  • Determine who pays the repair bill up front and if there’s a deductible.
  • Ask yourself if you’re planning to keep the car long after the factory warranty expires and if you’ll worry yourself sick if you don’t buy it.
  • Buy it from the dealer that initially sold you the vehicle rather than taking chances with an iffy third-party aftermarket extended warranty.

By carefully reviewing all of the options that exist in the world of extended warranties, you will be able to find the right one for you! We at B & B Auto Sales hope these tips have helped you!
