Ratan Tata is the Creator of the Indica and the Nano

Ratan Tata, an industrialist and investor in India, said that one day he would build a car that cost 100,000 rupees (approximately $1,500). His goal was to create an alternative for families in India who could only afford a motorcycle.

Automotive history is something we enjoy here at Allen Samuels Dodge Chrysler for our readers in Port Arthur, TX, so here is a profile about Ratan Tata, a car innovator and brilliant investor.

During his impressive career as the former chairman of the Tata Group of Companies, based in Mumbai, Ratan was instrumental in overseeing the development of two vehicles in particular--the Tata Indica and the Tata Nano.

Ratan was born in 1937. His parents separated when he was 10 years old and he and his brother were raised by his grandmother, Navajbai.

After receiving a BS in architecture in 1962 from Cornell University, Ratan joined the family business. He worked alongside blue-collar employees in the Tata Steel division, shoveling stones and working with furnaces. Later, he finished an Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

Once J.R.D. Tata retired, Ratan became chairman of the Tata Group of Companies in 1991. The global business conglomerate oversees Tata Motors, a multinational automotive manufacturing company established in India in 1945, as well as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Consultancy Services, Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices.

While in this position, Ratan was involved in launching Tata Motors’ first passenger vehicle in 1998, the Tata Indica.

Advertisements for the supermini car said it was “More car per car.” According to reports, the company received over 100,000 orders the first week it was unveiled. Although there were some early failures with the passenger cars, Tata Motors was ultimately successful in its sales.

Ratan was a key player in the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover. His dream to introduce an affordable vehicle came to fruition in 2008. The first Nano, believed to be the world’s least expensive vehicle, was introduced that year. Now, it is considered one of the most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India.

During his time as chairman, Ratan helped the Tata Group achieve international recognition. He resigned in 2012 when he turned 75 years old.

In addition to receiving many notable awards, Ratan was given two high honors in India: the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

“One of the primary goals of his life has been to raise the quality of life of Indians along with human development,” according to thefamouspeople.com. Known as a philanthropist and for living a low-profile lifestyle, Tata resides in Mumbai and drives a Tata sedan.
